Why Does Time-of-Flight Auto Focus for Projectors Makes Performance Take Off

Time-of-Flight Auto Focus for Projectors Makes Performance Take Off

Do you have to budget a lot of setup time when you use your projector? How long do you spend on keystone correction and image focus before movie, gaming, or family night? And, once you get your settings right, there’s no way you want to move the projector to a new location and start the process over. Right?

A new technology, Time-of-Flight (ToF), offers user-friendly solutions for these problems. The first ToF-powered feature is Auto Focus. This auto-adapting tech calculates the distance between your projector and the screen or wall you're projecting onto and then automatically adjusts the lens for a sharp image. So, you no longer have to worry about manual focus tweaking, even when you move your projector around.

What is ToF Technology

Time-of-Flight (ToF) technology is all about super-fast distance calculations. Using either a laser or LED light, it bounces light off the target surface, then measures how long it takes for the light to return to its sensor. This helps ToF ascertain the exact distance between the sensor and the object with incredible precision.

How Time-of-Flight (ToF) technology works in BenQ portable projectors

How Time-of-Flight (ToF) technology works in projectors

  1. Projection: The process begins as the projector emits LED or laser light onto the object you want to project.
  2. Distance Measurement: The projector's sensor emits light towards the target area, then measures the time it takes for the light to travel from the emitter to the target and back. This time measurement is used to calculate the distance between the projector and the object.
  3. Automatic Activation: Once the distance is calculated, the autofocus function is automatically triggered. The projector adjusts its focus to ensure that the projected image is clear and sharp, optimizing the visual quality without the need for any manual intervention.
The Perks of ToF Technology

ToF technology offers significant advantages: speed, precision, and a wide field of view. It accurately measures distances without needing a special screen – it works on any surface, even a plain wall, and does it in a matter of milliseconds.

What's even better is when you pair ToF with Auto Focus. Unlike traditional camera-based Auto Focus, ToF Auto Focus doesn't disrupt your video experience. Projectors sometimes need focus adjustments when they're moved to maintain picture clarity. With ToF Auto Focus, you can move the projector, and it automatically sets the right focus without needing a specific pattern on the screen. This means a smooth and trouble-free viewing experience.

The Benefit is Clear

It’s a reasonable desire to be able to get an ideal viewing experience without a lot of time, patience, and technical know-how. Time-of-Flight technology and Auto Focus were developed to make that possible and enjoyable.

Q: How to Use Auto Focus on the BenQ GP100A?

There are two ways to activate Auto Focus on the BenQ GP100A:

Manual Activation: Press the Focus button on the projector's remote control. The projector will automatically start focusing. It will then display a focus pattern for you to reference and make any manual adjustments if you'd like. After tweaking it to your satisfaction, you can save these focus settings for the current projection distance. The projector will conveniently use these saved parameters whenever it detects the same projection distance. But remember, these saved settings won't apply if you move the projector to a different location with a different projection distance. When you move the projector, simply do this process again.

Note: When the Focus button is pressed on the remote control, the projector will activate Auto Focus. It will then display a focus pattern that allows the user to make additional manual adjustments if desired. Afterward, the user can choose to save the focus settings for the current projection distance. At this point, the Focus for the current projection distance will be corrected based on the user's saved value, ensuring that the image is properly focused for the user. Additionally, the manually adjusted Focus settings can be stored and applied at any suitable projection distance without interfering with each other.

Automatic Activation: If you'd rather not use the remote control, you can activate Auto Focus by moving the projector closer to or farther from the screen or by giving it a slight nudge. This action will instantly correct the focus, ensuring your movie-watching experience remains uninterrupted.
